In the morning of July 7^th, 2016, at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province took place an opening ceremony of international conference “Basic science and society”
Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with Binh Dinh Province People's Committee, Meeting Vietnam Association, European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), International Solvay Institute organized the conference under sponsored by UNESCO. The event saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam; Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh; Chairman of Meeting Vietnam Association Prof. Tran Thanh Van and more than 200 domestic and international famous scientists (in which, there are 5 reputable scientists got Nobel Prize, 1 Professor awarded the Fields Medal) and representatives of several famous economic groups of the world.
The conference “Basic science and society” is not only the scientific conference, but the event is also to create opportunities for scientists to meet, discuss and make clear the importance of basic science for the development of society and show us what basic science has made for the success of famous businesses in the world.



In his speech at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam stressed: "It is said that Vietnam should focus on the acquisition and application of technology. Basic science research is the story of the future and developed countries. However, basic science has basically been focused and invested by Government of Vietnam. Investing in basic science research is the strategic investment, the investment for the foundation, to strengthen national potential".
Speaking at the conference, Prof. Nguyen Van Hieu asked specific questions about the direction of Vietnam basic science research and according to him, the application- oriented basic science research should continue to be promoted.
Within the framework of “the 12^th Vietnam Meeting” there will be 12 scientific conferences and 3 international thematic classes on physics in Quy Nhon; 4 popular scientific talk shows for those who love of science in Quy Nhon and Hanoi.
